Who is the best tennis player ever?
This is not an easy discussion an each tennis fan has a different opinion based on the tennis style you like, your nationality and many other factors.
Some discussion bring up into discussion “what ifs”. What if Roger Federer would played in the same times that Pete Sampras or Rod Laver? What if Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal would have to play with wood racquets? Well those are questions that we will never know.
Again each person has its personal opinion, for instance John McEnroe has express his personal opinion publicly: “Rafael Nadal is the best ever, even with a first-round Wimbledon loss“(1)
What I’m trying to come up in this article and with my research is a way to measure in a quantitative way. The formula that I came up to bring a final score for each player is to assign a number of points to each tournament and to sum all of the points to come up with a total score. I have assigned 2,000 points to the winner of a grand slam, 1,000 points for each Master 1000 and 500 points for each Tour 500 Series.
Following my score system, Roger Federer is the best player of all times, however, Rafael Nadal who is placed second best tennis player of all times is 5 years younger and remain active. It is also true that because the most physical style of Rafa he will probably retire at younger age than Federer.
